Zimbabwe’s 2025 GDP now twice that of Zambia.
Zimbabwe’s 2025 GDP now twice that of Zambia.

Not too long ago, people used to ask me why I fight sanctions instead of corruption, and I used to say to them that sanctions are the ones holding back our economy. Now, one year after removing sanctions, our economy has rocketed from $38 billion to $53 billion.

I am reminded of a day in 2018 when Tinashe Murapata (the economist) bragged about Zambia’s economy being bigger than Zimbabwe at $27 billion. This annoyed me and forced me to become more aggressive about fighting sanctions. Today, seven years later, Zambia’s economy is $28 billion and Zimbabwe’s economy is now almost twice as big.

The fact is the Mnangagwa administration created great policies and implemented them well, but they were being held back by illegal sanctions. Those sanctions are now gone and the economy is flying, illustrating that our problem was never corruption.

You guys who said β€œit’s corruption and not sanctions” must eat humble pie and admit that I was right.
