Geo Pomona is one of only two waste‑management centres in Africa that actually processes waste for recycling and will convert the remaining waste into energy once the project is complete. Currently, Geo Pomona has reclaimed 40 years of waste, processing and removing recyclable material from the old landfill, then encapsulating the remaining waste underground in a non‑permeable, air‑tight “bubble” so that it does not pollute underground water or the air.

Soil and lawn have then been laid on top of the airless bubble, transforming what was once Harare’s dumpsite into a park and recreational facility with sports facilities, restaurants and prime real estate. The rest of the land is being used to build the waste‑processing and waste‑to‑energy plant. Adjacent to it is a water‑treatment plant that converts wastewater from the landfill into clean, drinkable water used to irrigate the park.

As a result, the plant produces valuable recyclable resources that have created recycling jobs, and the recycling process has generated hundreds of jobs. The development of the centre has had a multiplier effect, creating hundreds of jobs for local metal‑fabricating companies that are producing waste bins; the truck‑maintenance shop employs mechanics; while the plant employs various engineers; and Bitumen is constructing the roads, bridges and infrastructure on the 15‑hectare industrial site.
